Mask Options:

A1 : N95 cover, cloth ties [recommended for HCW]

A2 : N95 cover, filter pocket, nose wire, cloth ties [recommended for HCW or frontline worker]

B : Filter pocket, nose wire, elastic bands [for frontline worker or general public]

C : 2 layers cotton, no filter pocket, elastic bands [general public]

D : No-Sew mask; NMCR will provide cloth, rubber bands, and filters [general public]*NM Craft Responders will only provide filters for D—since filters can’t be washed and need to be handled in order to be cut, it’s best if the wearer can buy their own for masks A2 and B. Intubation Box:This is a clear plexiglass box that covers a patient’s face during the intubation process. It includes two holes for the doctor or nurse to insert their hands and serves as additional protection between medical staff and patient when performing endotracheal intubation.

Hello fellow sewists and makers! Thanks for joining the mobilization and solidarity effort! This COVID19 crisis is a big reminder that we are all interconnected. As makers we can put our skills to use during #StayAtHome, busying our hands and helping to protect community members. 
This page contains information on making DIY facemasks.

Getting Started:&#38;nbsp;
We have categorized mask patterns according to who they are appropriate for: Healthcare Worker (HCW) or Non-Healthcare Worker (non-HCW). This categorization is based on mask design features but is not absolute.&#38;nbsp;
Questions to ask when deciding what kind of mask to make:&#38;nbsp;
1. Do I need a filter pocket?
• Providing a filter pocket allows the user to insert a non-woven material as a filter for extra protection. See info below on appropriate filter materials
• Mask options A2 and B provide filter pockets; these are recommended for HCWs or frontline workers with high exposure to others, such as grocery store employees.&#38;nbsp;

2. Do I need cloth ties or elastic?
• Cloth ties are recommended for HCWs and other frontline workers. They are more comfortable for the wearer and can withstand commercial laundering.&#38;nbsp;
• Masks with elastic bands are faster to make. However, there are several disadvantages:&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 
a. When worn for long periods, elastic bands can cause pain around the ears.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; b. Elastic will break down rapidly if laundered multiple times. 
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; c. Elastic material is currently difficult to find since many are making DIY masks.&#38;nbsp;
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; d. Those with latex allergies cannot wear elastic bands.

MAKING MASKS FOR HEALTHCARE WORKERS (HCW):

• IMPORTANT: If you are making for HCW, always contact them directly to ask what they need
• These masks are durable and can withstand industrial washing, but they’re more time-consuming to make• Use a different color fabric or “wrong” side on the inside of mask so it’s easy for HCW to distinguish inside/outside
• You can use pre-purchased double-fold, cotton blend bias tape or make it yourself&#38;nbsp; [note: you don’t need to make it on the bias]

&#38;gt;&#38;nbsp;A1 option: 2 layers cotton, cloth ties. This is an N95 cover, designed to be worn over an N95 mask to prolong its use. This is known as the “A.B. Mask, for a nurse by a nurse.” Here’s another version.
&#38;gt;&#38;nbsp;A2 option: 2 layers cotton + filter pocket + nose wire, cloth ties. This is a versatile mask for HCWs or other frontline workers such as grocery store employees. Can be made without interfacing.&#38;nbsp;
&#38;gt;&#38;gt; Check out this A2 video tutorial
MASKS FOR EVERYONE ELSE (non-HCW):
&#38;gt;&#38;nbsp;B option: 2 layers cotton + filter pocket + nose wire, elastic or knit ties. This is an easy pattern. Try knit ties (cut up t-shirt fabric) if you can’t find elastic.&#38;nbsp;
&#38;gt;&#38;nbsp;C option: 2 layers cotton + nose wire, knit ties. This easy-to-make pattern was developed by Stitchology fabric store in Albuquerque, NM.&#38;nbsp;
&#38;gt; D&#38;nbsp;option:  This is a “No-Sew” mask. Easy to assemble and recommended for general population for those who can’t get a sewn mask.&#38;nbsp;

IMPORTANT NOTES: (adapted from COVID Mask Crafters):

1.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Please pre-shrink your 100% cotton fabrics before you begin cutting out your masks.&#38;nbsp; Cotton fabrics tend to shrink significantly in the wash and the last thing we want is for your beautiful masks to shrink at the hospital and render them unusable. 

2.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Washing Instructions: Use unscented detergent or WHITE VINEGAR in a hot wash followed by a hot dry cycle to remove as much of the shrinkage as possible.&#38;nbsp; Do not use fabric softener or dryer sheets. 

3.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Do not try on a mask that you are sending out.&#38;nbsp; Do not take photos of a mask on yourself or on a pet.&#38;nbsp; Masks that have been tried on and have not been washed should NOT be donated in an effort to prevent the spread of the COVID-19. 

4. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; NM Craft Responders does not provide filters—since they can’t be washed and they need to be handled in order to be cut, it’s best if the wearer can buy their own. Use non-woven materials such as an unscented swiffer cloth; HEPA AC filter; coffee filters, blue shop towels; washed and dried wet wipes. See this article on best materials for filters. 

5. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; If you are making masks for NMCR, follow these Instructions for Packing:
 &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; 
• Take a photo of your finished masks and share with us! craftresponders@gmail.com• Wash all masks in hot water and unscented detergent or white vinegar. Dry on high. No bleach, fabric softener, or dryer sheets. 
• Wash your hands for 20 sec before handling the clean masks (to transfer to dryer and to plastic bags)• Wear a mask while handling clean masks to pack. Place clean masks in a ziploc bag.• Mark the outside of the ziploc with a permanent marker: quantity, mask type&#38;nbsp; (e.g. #7-A1), and your initials (this helps us keep track!)
NOTE: if you are packing “D” masks, they must be packed in bags of 10 or 20 only. Follow same instructions as above for washing and packing. • One of our team members will contact you for pickup/delivery. Thank you!!

Hola compañerxs que cosen y fabrican! ¡Gracias por unirse al esfuerzo de movilización y solidaridad! Esta crisis de COVID19 es un gran recordatorio de que todxs estamos interconectadxs. Esta página contiene información en cómo hacer el cubreboca usted mismo.&#38;nbsp;Si desea unirse a NM Craft Responders como fabricante o voluntario llene esta forma.


Comencemos:

Hemos categorizado patrones de cubreboca según a quienes sean apropiadas para: Personal de Salud (PDS) o para No Personal de Salud (no-PDS). Esta categorización se basa en las características de diseño del cubreboca, pero no es absoluta.


Qué preguntas hay que responder para decidir qué tipo de cubreboca hacer:
1. ¿Necesito una bolsa para filtro?&#38;nbsp;• Proporcionar una bolsa para filtro permite al usuario insertar un material no tejido como filtro para una protección adicional. Ver información a continuación sobre los materiales de filtro apropiados (en inglés).

• Las opciones de cubrebocas A2 y B proporcionan una bolsa para filtros; Se recomiendan para personal de salud o trabajadores de primera línea con alta exposición a otros, como los empleados de supermercados.
2. ¿Necesito cordones de tela o elásticos?

CUBREBOCAS PARA PERSONAL DE SALUD (PDS)

Opción A1: 2 capas de algodón, cordones de tela. Esta es una cubierta N95, diseñada para usarse sobre el cubreboca N95 para prolongar su uso. Esto se conoce como el "A.B. cubreboca, para una enfermera por una enfermera”.


Opción A2: 2 capas de algodón + bolsa para filtro + alambre nasal, cordones de tela. Esta es cubreboca versátil para el personal de salud u otros trabajadores de primera línea, como los empleados de supermercados. Se puede hacer sin interfaz.

CUBREBOCAS PARA LA POBLACIÓN EN GENERAL (no-PDS)


Opción B: algodón de 2 capas + bolsa para filtro + hilo nasal, bandas elásticas. Este es un patrón fácil. Prueba con cordones tejidos (tela cortada para camisetas) si no puedes encontrar elástico.


Opción C: 2 capas de algodón, cordones tejidos. Este patrón fácil de hacer fue desarrollado por la tienda de telas Stitchology en Albuquerque, NM.


Opción D: múltiples capas de algodón + filtro opcional, codones tejidos. Esta es el cubreboca "Sin costura". Fácil de montar y recomendado para la población en general para aquellos que no pueden obtener el cubreboca cosido.

NOTAS IMPORTANTES: (adaptado de COVID Mask Crafters)

1. Por favor, encoja previamente sus telas 100% de algodón antes de comenzar a cortar su cubreboca. Las telas de algodón tienden a encogerse significativamente en el lavado y lo último que queremos es que su hermoso cubreboca se encojan en el hospital y las vuelvan inutilizables.
2. Instrucciones de lavado: Use detergente sin perfume o vinagre blanco en un lavado en caliente seguido de un ciclo de secado en caliente para eliminar la mayor contracción posible. No use suavizante de telas ni hojas suavizantes para la secadora.

3. No te pruebes el cubreboca que estás enviando. No tomes fotos del cubreboca sobre usted o sobre una mascota. El cubreboca que se han probado NO deben donarse en un esfuerzo por evitar la propagación del COVID-19.

4. Elástico es difícil de encontrar en estos días. Puede hacer su propia cinta de sesgo [nota: no necesita hacerlo en el sesgo] o usar cordones de tela de punto (corte el material de la camiseta en tiras).

5. NM Craft Responders no proporciona filtros, ya que no se pueden lavar y deben manipularse para cortarlos, es mejor si el usuario del cubreboca puede comprar los suyos. Hemos probado paños swiffer sin perfume (marca genérica) que se cortan a 6 in. x 3.75 in. y parecen proporcionar transpirabilidad. 6. Si haces cubreboca para NMCR: una vez completado, siga estas instrucciones para el embalaje:• ¡Tome una foto de sus cubreboca terminados y compártala con nosotros! craftresponders@gmail.com
• Lave todos con agua caliente y detergente sin perfume o vinagre blanco. Secar en alto. Sin lavandina, suavizante de telas u hojas de secado. Lávese las manos durante 20 segundos antes de manipular cubreboca limpios (para transferir a la secadora y a las bolsas de plástico) Use cubreboca mientras manipula cubreboca limpios para empacar. Coloque cubreboca limpios en una bolsa ziploc.
• Marque el exterior del ziploc con un marcador permanente: cantidad y tipo de cubreboca (por ejemplo, # 7-A1)
• NOTA: si está empacando el cubreboca "D", deben empacarse en bolsas de 10 o 20 solamente. Siga las mismas instrucciones que las anteriores para lavar y empacar.

Cajas de intubación:
Es una caja hecha de acrílico transparente que se usa para cubrir la cara de un paciente durante del proceso de entubación. Tiene dos agujeros en donde el personal médico puede meter sus manos y sirve como protección adicional hacia el personal médico está ejecutando intubación endotraqueal.

¿Quién debe usar el cubreboca?
El CDC recomiendan que todos usen cubreboca no médica cuando estén en supermercados y en espacios públicos.
Necesita usar cubreboca si está cuidando a una persona con sospecha de infección 2019-nCoV.
Use cubreboca si está tosiendo o estornudando.
El usuario de cubreboca es efectivo solo cuando se usa en combinación con la limpieza frecuente de las manos con un desinfectante para manos a base de alcohol o agua y jabón.

Further thoughts:

• We don’t know what level of protection these masks offer: we are not healthcare professionals and these masks have not been tested in a lab. That said, CDC guidelines state: “In settings where facemasks are not available, [health care professionals] might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort.” The idea behind making these masks is to:

1) Offer protection to non-healthcare workers so that we aren’t purchasing PPE (personal protective equipment) that they need; and

2) Offer protection to healthcare workers (HCW) who might be in need because of a shortage — some protection is better than none, and we have already seen some healthcare workers resorting to the use of bandanas and improvised facemasks. IMPORTANT: If you are sewing masks to donate to HCWs, it’s imperative to ask them directly what they need. 

• Remember that if you are wearing one, avoid touching the outer part during or after use. Droplets with the virus can land and survive on the outer part, so you’ll want to disinfect it after use by washing with hot water and soap (or hanging for 3 days). And wash your hands thoroughly!

• Your mask needs to be breathable. If you are finding it hard to breathe with the mask, remove the filter (if there is one). Studies we have seen suggest that the 2 layers of cotton provide protection for non-clinical settings. If you still have trouble breathing, remove the mask and notify your healthcare provider if you are in a situation where a mask is recommended.

• Another tip on protection: wear glasses! If you have glasses, wear them instead of contact lenses. The novel coronavirus can spread through mucosa of the eyes, nose, and mouth. Wearing glasses adds a layer of protection for your eyes.

2) Ofrecer protección al personal de la salud (PDS) que puedan estar necesitados debido a una escasez: cierta protección es mejor que ninguna, y ya hemos visto al personal de salud recurrir al uso de pañuelos y máscaras faciales improvisadas.
